After Canadian Idol

Emily's Year in Review

The following write-up appears on the Canadian Idol website:

The multi-talented Emily Vinette returned home from Canadian Idol with a new perspective on living one day at a time -- but also to the reality that she was in her last year of high school with dreams of becoming a doctor.

In an Eye on Idol interview during Season 3, in which Vinette placed tenth, she said one of the most important things she learned from the show's gruelling schedule was how to focus on enjoying the moment while doing her best.

She's had to shift gears slightly since being voted off the show -- because her goal of working in medicine requires years of advance planning and hard work.

This fall, she will head to University of Ottawa to study biomedical science, for which she has been offered a scholarship. Her high marks and devotion to her studies earned her scholarships to both Ottawa U. and Carleton.

"(After Canadian Idol) I had to catch up at school and catch up I did," said Vinette.

But, despite the endless schoolwork that kept her on Notre Dame High School's honour roll and had universities begging to be her selection, the experienced singer had time to appear at multiple weddings and events, including a University of Ottawa-organized fundraiser in support of the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) Foundation.

The event, which also featured a speech from Canadian Idol judge Zack Werner, raised more than $20,000 for the foundation and attracted a sold out crowd of 600.

She also sang 14 songs at a CHEO benefit during the Christmas season called One Merry Night, and performed in a third in May entitled The Spirit of the Capital Awards.

In the winter, Vinette sang the national anthems for the opening of the 2006 North American Speed Skating Marathon Championships, for the Ontario Hockey League's Ottawa 67's, and this spring for Ottawa Lynx (minor league baseball).

She also judged the Ottawa Media Idol contest held during this year's Canadian Idol auditions in March.

"Hardly a week goes by that someone doesn't ask her to sing something," her mom Yvonne told Eye on Idol. Laughing, she added that perhaps her daughter takes show business a bit too seriously, considering the results of a recent bike accident.

"She was singing while biking and she closed her eyes for a second and hit the curb," said Yvonne, while driving Emily to the hospital for a check-up on her cast. "That's not what we meant when told her to break a leg."

Despite her cast, Vinette plans to keep on singing, saying Canadian Idol has improved her performance skills drastically.

"It's made me a way better singer," she told Eye on Idol. "I'm not nervous now to sing in front of people and I'm more of a perfectionist.

"It's really increased my love for singing. There's nothing negative that came out of that show for me."
