Emily's journey to Top 10

The introduction

Emily Vinette, a 17-year-old high school student from Ottawa, ON, made her debut in many Canadian's lives during the second episode of Canadian Idol Season 3 that aired on CTV May 31, 2005. She sang "Don't Cry Out Loud" and her audition* was the only one that made this viewer sit up and take notice.

Emily looked modest and not presumptuous wearing a casual outfit consisting of a white, plunging v-neckline blouse, a brown (what looked to be suede) jacket, and blue jeans. Her curly, shoulder-length, blonde hair framed her fair, attractive face well, but what captivated me most about Emily's physical features were her dazzling blue eyes. Then she started to sing. I was impressed as she held a long, high note, but when she successfully changed keys I said "Woah!" as chills surged through me, and I was reminded of when I first saw Kalan Porter's audition one year previously. For me, I knew Emily was it, just as I had known Kalan would be Canada's next Canadian Idol.

Emily not only impressed me, but she impressed the Canadian Idol judges too. Sass Jordan was all smiles as Emily performed. Her eyes widened and jaw dropped as she watched with this "shock and awe" look on her face when Emily skillfully changed keys on top of that long-held note. Sass looked around at the other judges to see if they were as equally impressed and said under her breath to judge Farely Flex "I'm in" and he responded "Oh, totally". When Emily finished Farely said enthusiastically, "Good job!" and she responded with a "Thanks!" and a beautiful, bright smile. Then Jake Gold led the deliberations beginning with Zack Werner.

Zack looked like a young, shy, school boy whose crush was just found out as he could not even look up when he said with a grin on his face "Ohhhhh, I think Emily would be entertaining to have around. I'm a yes."

"I think you're fabulous" Sass tells Emily.

"I think you have a ton of potential, kid", Farley says encouragingly, as Sass interjects with "What a note!" and Farley continues critiquing "Yeah, you got a nice balls-y, kinda brassy tone up top, and I was really impressed."

Jake, in a very business like manner says to Emily "Pick up your ticket, you're going to Toronto."

As Emily walks toward the judges, Farely quickly adds "Yeah, you are very easy to like."

If Emily Vinette was going to be my Canadian Idol in 2005, I now needed to learn more about her before "jumping on the band wagon." This intrigued viewer now became a very curious viewer.

Getting acquainted

I watched for Emily during the Toronto episodes (4&5) which are fondly referred to as "Idol boot camp" by Canadian Idol fans, often spotting her in the back of groups looking inconspicuous. There was a brief three second clip* of her performing "One Fine Day" with Erika Peck and Amber Fleury during the groups segment of the show, but that was hardly enough to show case her talent. I was very pleased when, at the end of "Idol boot camp", Emily was announced as making the Top 32.

Emily did not receive much "face time" in these last two episodes, and I was left feeling like I didn't really know who she was. The Internet, being a valuable source of information, was where I started my quest to learn more about this young woman who caught my attention.

After Googling "Emily Vinette" I was disappointed to discover there was no web site dedicated to Emily. Only four sites with content of any substance, not counting her bio, could be located:

I also came across a forum post which contained a link to a web site with video clips of Canadian Idol. Eureka! Emily's audition was among several made available.

With this information, and armed with a link to Emily's audition, I set out to share Emily with the world! Well, at least with those who read and participated on the Canadian Idol Forum. This intrigued and very curious viewer now became a "fan".

Shining a light and spreading the word

The fact that there was not much information on the Internet about Emily, in combination with her not receiving much "face time" on the first five episodes of Canadian Idol, I felt compelled to actively start promoting her talent, and Emily herself as a person worthy of being a role model for today's Canadian youth. I believed it would truly be a shame for such potential talent to go unrecognized because no one bothered to bring it to light.

Canadian Idol's forum has been my main sounding board, as I post regularly under any topic relevant where I can spread the word about Emily. I'm also a part of Emily's fan base currently known as "The Vines" and "deVINETTEs".

I started this web site on June 15, 2005 as another means to share my opinion about Emily Vinette, and I plan to update it over time as I cheer on my favourite Canadian Idol contestant to the Top 10, and God-willing, the top spot as Canada's next Canadian Idol.
